ELIA Life Technology PBC
We are a public benefit company based in Brooklyn, New York. We measure our success on our ability to effect positive change in the rates of Education, Employment, Literacy and Independence of All* people who are blind or have a visual impairment. Those goals are both societal and economic. They may require patience and perseverance over the course of decades. Or we may be at a tipping point. Regardless, our stakeholders are an atypical group of people and institutions that share our long-term goals, and help us achieve our short and medium term successes.
Our work is informed by research data, with an aim towards understanding, and adding to, the critical data from the field of visual impairment. We are constantly asking questions - “How can we make tactile learning and reading more intuitive? What are the core problems and their dynamics? What are the daily needs of people who have a visual impairment and what technology could help tackle each one of those needs? What mainstream technology can be re-investigated and applied to our field to bring about positive change? What new technology could help us leapfrog over inefficient, older technology? What current tools in the toolbox would be more useful, except for the lack of complementary technology?” More generally we ask “What is the scaffolding of products and services that are needed to reach a tipping point of a core societal challenge?” And we ask social science research questions - “Once a new platform technology is available, what other resources would make it more useful?” We are of the belief that there must be a better way to approach the challenges.
We also believe that there is an economic opportunity to do well while doing good. Our shareholders have invested their faith and capital in both our mission and our ability to return capital to them at an attractive rate. We intent to surpass their expectations in both regards, while surpassing the expectations of our customers. It is not helpful to be shy about our intentions, so we have stated them here. Our Public Benefit Company (PBC) statement regarding our operating principles can be found here.
We welcome all collaboration from individuals, corporations, educators and not-for-profits to achieve the shared goals.
